Dedicated: June 1st,
2003

The
image for our first mural has a history. The Manteca Mural Society (MMS)
formation committee started by searching for the right theme. A lot of
discussion revolved around the portrayal of agriculture, viticulture, the dairy
industry, or some architectural aspect or historical event in our city.
The answer agreed upon by all was to develop the first mural theme
around a historical event, Manteca becoming a city. In May 1918 Manteca was
incorporated and became a city. Look at the images and see how the idea was
transformed from words to the image and soon to be painted as a mural.
First Draft - October 2002
The theme for the first mural is Downtown
Manteca in 1918, the year Manteca became a city.
This first image is the
artists "rough draft." The artist, Dave Gordon has inserted some basic elements
that the Manteca Mural Society may want to consider in the first work. The
components in this draft were taken from the numerous photos that Dave reviewed.
Dave received input from the Artistic Criteria Committee and members of the
Manteca Mural society about the theme we wanted for our first mural. The purpose
of this draft was to see if he was on track with what we collectively desired.
Second Draft - October 2002
Keep in mind that the wall of the Century
Furniture building is 20 feet high by 80 feet wide. This image was created on
the artist's computer using state of the art software, images provided courtesy
of the Manteca Historical Society and images provided from the photo archives of
the Bank of Stockton.
The image below is a street perspective view.
Third Draft - November 2002
This image contains several substantive
changes. The artist, Dave Gordon, listened carefully to the Artistic Criteria
Committee and members of the Manteca Mural society. He incorporated as many of
the suggestions as he could. This scene according to the Manteca Historical
Society is much more closely reflective of the architectural appearance of
Manteca in 1918.
Final Draft - June 2003 - Street Perspective
This image is of the completed
mural.
Dave also incorporated a lot of whimsy in this draft. Can you pick
it out?
